SSL Certificates

SSL Certificates

An SSL certificate allows your website to load securely using https://.

Most modern websites should use SSL, especially websites with contact forms, logins, shopping carts, or any customer information.

Free SSL

Most WebhostingNZ hosting accounts can use free SSL.

Once your hosting account is active and your domain nameservers are pointing to our server, the server will normally attempt to install a free SSL certificate automatically.

This may take up to 24 hours after the domain starts pointing correctly.

Free SSL may also apply to subdomains, addon domains, and alias domains on the hosting account, provided they point correctly to the server.

When SSL may not install

Free SSL may fail if:

  • the domain is not pointing to our server
  • DNS has only recently changed and has not finished updating
  • the website is behind a third-party proxy or DNS provider
  • the domain has redirects or DNS records that prevent validation
  • the hosting account is suspended

Paid SSL certificates

In most cases, free SSL is suitable.

If you specifically require a paid SSL certificate, please contact us and we can advise available options and pricing.
